Halifax - Expanding Solar Energy
The municipal government has engaged citizens in taking action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through its Solar City program. This program offers municipal financing to residents to install solar-powered water heating systems to help lower their energy bills and reduce water consumption.
10,500 tonnes of reductions in GHG emissions will be realized through this program, and $14.4 million in savings over the lifespan of the solar panels, approximately 25 years. That averages $20,600 per home. This program also saves water and improves air quality.
"Halifax is a leader when it comes to energy efficiency and the environment, and I know our citizens are equally involved in efforts to help reverse climate change. We owe it to our children and grandchildren to do everything we can now to ensure they inherit a better world tomorrow." Michael Savage, Mayor of Halifax.
